Kat Van Horn
Kathryn Van Horn is a self-taught mixed media artist whose work bridges the natural and the fantastical. She uses materials like acrylic paint, epoxy resin, and molding paste to create richly layered visual pieces. In addition to her paintings, she crafts delicate hair accessories and jewelry from natural elements, often featuring motifs like flowers, bees, and butterflies—tiny tributes to the beauty of the living world.
Her subject matter often features flora, fauna, and mythic beings—especially the iyagȧnasha, the “little people” of Chickasaw tradition. These magical tricksters and healers appear throughout her work as caretakers of the planet, blending folklore with environmental consciousness. Influenced by the classical precision of Andrew Loomis and the ethereal storytelling of Stephanie Pui-Mun Law, Van Horn’s art is driven by a love of nature, fantasy, and the emotional power of color. Though not formally trained, her practice is rooted in years of experimentation, persistence, and a deep curiosity that began in childhood.
Her work invites viewers into a world where imagination and ecology intertwine—where fairies tend wildflowers and mermaids guard coral reefs. It’s a visual language that’s vibrant, layered, and thoughtfully enchanted.
